Topic A: Rising Sea Levels
In recent years, the impact of climate change has caused global sea levels to rise at a rapid rate. Since the 1800s, it has risen by 8 or 9 inches. Warming temperatures have increased the melting of glaciers and ice sheets, adding insane amounts of water to the oceans. In addition to having drastic effects on local ecosystems, higher sea levels threaten the existence of many communities. Cities that lie in coastal areas run the risk of becoming uninhabitable as flooding increases. That danger becomes amplified once it becomes clear that sudden storms can quickly wipe out neighborhoods. Human activity is a major contributor to global warming, yet so few seem committed to slowing its progression. The goal of this committee will be to decide the best measures to protect vulnerable areas from flooding. Additionally, we will seek to determine a course of action to slow down the impact of rising sea levels as much as possible.
Topic B: Fukushima Diaster and Nuclear Threats
In 2011, a major earthquake created a tsunami that interfered with crucial infrastructure at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, causing three reactors to meltdown. Tens of thousands were forced to evacuate from their homes as fears surrounding radiation exposure grew. This was the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl. While incidents regarding nuclear accidents are relatively uncommon, they can have a huge impact when they do occur. To this day, the area around Chernobyl remains largely uninhabited. As countries are developing and starting to look for alternative sources of energy, many are finding nuclear energy to be the best source to use. However, additional precautions must be taken to ensure that the worst case scenario does not happen. The purpose of this committee will be to prevent similar situations from arising and figure out the best plan of action if they do.
